The need for this project has been demonstrated in a number of national research reports. Obstacles and Opportunities on the Route to Adulthood (Institute of Education, 2000) showed that children from working class homes are no more likely to get educational qualifications than they were 20 years ago. Data from the Office of National Statistics revealed that, in 2002, 77 per cent of children in Year 11 in England and Wales with parents in higher professional occupations gained five or more A* to C grade GCSEs. This was more than double the proportion for children with parents in routine occupations. A London University report published this year, using data from the DfES, matching almost 1 million pupils with their individual postcode and exam scores, indicated that a child's social background is the crucial factor in academic performance.
New Philanthropy Capital has recently chosen IntoUniversity as one of their recommended charities. See the following links for more information.
